About CA Profession

  • Chartered Accountant is known as ‘CA’, he is also known as ‘Auditor’ in general.
  • CA is considered as India’s number one Accounting, Auditing and Taxation profession. The role and title of CA is created by act of parliament through Chartered Accountant Act, 1949.   • Currently CA qualified members are 280,000 (approx.) which is far below than the Industry requirement.
  • CA profession is regulated and manged by Institute of Chartered Accountancy of India (ICAI), New Delhi.

Levels in CA Exams

Foundation course

Consist of 4 papers of 100 marks each Duration: 3 hour

Intermediate course

Group I (Consist of 4 papers of 100 marks each) Duration: 3 hour
Group II (Consist of 4 papers of 100 marks each) Duration: 3 hour

Final course

Group I (Consist of 4 papers of 100 marks) Duration: 3 hour
Group II (Consist of 4 papers of 100 marks each) Duration: 3 hour

Eligibility to Enrol for CA

  • After passing 10+2 (or equivalent), student can enrol for CA-Foundation
  • Graduates can enrol directly for CA- intermediate, however minimum marks in graduation to enrol for CA-Intermediate is – For Commerce Graduate 55% and For Others 60%

Registration Timings

For 10+2 passed students

Before 31st June to write CA- Foundation exam in November
Before 31st December to write CA-Foundation exam in May

For Graduation completed students

Any time they can register but they need to complete the important study requirements before they appear for Intermediate exam, as mentioned below.

Important Study Requirements in CA

Any student who has enrolled for CA has to undergo following trainings along with their exams :-

  • Complete four weeks of Integrated course on Information Technology and Soft Skills (ICITSS) – Orientation and Computer Training, before enrolling for Practical Training
  • Under go three years of Practical Training/Article Training. Complete at least Nine month of training before writing the Intermediate exam.
  • Complete four weeks of Advanced Integrated course on Information Technology and Soft Skills (AICITSS) after completion of Intermediate exam but before writing the final exam.

Registration Procedure

There are two ways of doing CA

  • Foundation route for PUC/10+2 completed students.
  • Direct entry route for Graduation completed students.

Foundation Route

  • Enrol through ICAI portal for CA-Foundation after completion of 10+2
  • Write CA-Foundation exam in November/May (as mentioned above)
  • After passing CA-Foundation exam enrol for CA-intermediate
  • Complete at least 8 months study duration and write CA-Intermediate, single or both groups in Nov/May.
  • After passing one/both groups, Enrol and complete four weeks of ICITSS (Orientation and Computer Training)
  • Enrol for Three years of Practical Training or Article Training with any Practicing CA
    (This can be enrolled after completion one/both groups of Intermediate)
  • Register for CA-Final course through ICAI Portal after completion of CA-intermediate
  • Complete four weeks of Advanced ICITSS before appearing
  • Appear for Final Exam (After completion of Advanced ICITSS and 2.5 years of Practical Training)
  • Complete Both Groups of Final and Complete Practical Training to become Qualified CA

Direct Route

  • Enrol through ICAI portal for CA-Intermediate after completion of Graduation
  • Enrol and complete four weeks of ICITSS(Orientation and Computer Training)
  • Enrol for Three years of Practical Training or Article Training with any Practicing CA (This can be enrolled after completion one/both groups of Intermediate)
  • Complete 9 months of Practical Training and Appear for CA-Intermediate Exam
  • Register for CA-Final course through ICAI Portal after completion of CA-intermediate
  • Complete four weeks of Advanced ICITSS before appearing
  • Appear for Final Exam (After completion of Advanced ICITSS and 2.5 years of Practical training)
  • Complete Both Groups of Final and Complete Practical Training to become Qualified CA

Documents needed for Registration

Foundation course (Applicable for 10+2 pass students)

  • Students needs to register CA-Foundation course by Filling online registration form available in ICAI portal (www. ICAI.org) under “Students tab – course Registration Form”
  • Pay required fee after filling the above application form
  • System will automatically generate the Form after the above process
  • Take print out of the above Form and send it Concern Regional Offices (Chennai/Mumbai/Kolkata/Delhi) within 7 days along with the following documents
    • - Hard copy of duly signed above printed form
    • - Affix the recent colour photo graph on the above form
    • - Attested copy of 10+2 marks card
    • - Attested copy of 10th marks card indicating name and date of birth
  • After successful completion of the above registration student get Study material from the ICAI.

Intermediate course (Applicable for Graduates and Foundation passed out students)

  • Students needs to register CA-Intermediate course by Filling online registration form available in ICAI portal
  • Pay required fee after filling the above application form
  • System will automatically generate the Form after the above process
  • Take print out of the above Form and send it Concern Regional Offices (Chennai/Mumbai/Kolkata/Delhi) within 7 days along with the following documents
    • - Hard copy of duly signed above printed form
    • - Affix the recent colour photo graph on the above form
    • - Attested copy of Graduation marks card
    • - Attested copy of 10+2 marks card and Foundation marksheet for CA-Foundation passed out students
  • After successful completion of the above registration student get study material from the ICAI.

Provisional Registration for Intermediate

Students who are pursuing final year of Graduation can also apply for registration for intermediate course on provisional basis with in 6 months from the date of writing final year degree exam. During provision registration time, student can undergo orientation training and computer training (ICITSS) but he/she need to produce the degree completion certificate with in above time otherwise their registrations and trainings shall stand cancelled and fee paid will not be refunded.

Final course (After completing CA-Intermediate)

  • Students need to register CA-Final course by Filling online registration form available in ICAI portal
  • Pay required fee after filling the above application form
  • System will automatically generate the Form after the above process
  • Take print out of the above Form and send it to Concern Regional Offices (Chennai/Mumbai/Kolkata/Delhi) within 7 days along with the hard copy of duly signed printed form
  • After successful completion of the above registration student get study material from the ICAI.

Exam Structure

  • Exam would be conducted twice in a year – May/Nov
  • Only after passing one level student can go to another level i.e. after passing foundation one can go to Intermediate and similarly, after passing intermediate one can go to Final exam.
  • Intermediate and Final student has an option to write either single group or both groups.

Minimum marks to pass CA

  • Minimum 40 marks in each paper and aggregate 50% of all papers put to-gather
  • If any of the above two conditions are not met, student needs to write all the papers once again. Example – Foundation student got all papers 40 marks above but failed to get 200 marks in all four papers, then he/she is considered to have failed in the exam.
  • Student can get exemption in each paper if he secures 60 marks in any paper. It means if as student fails any group but secure 60 marks in any paper, then such paper he need not write next time. However, this exemption is valid only until next three consecutive attempts until which student need to pass such group in which he/she got exemption.

Qualifications to be used after Passing CA

After successful completion of CA-Final, student will become qualified Chartered Accountant. After paying necessary membership fee member is eligible to use “ACA” (Associate Member of Chartered Accountant) and after completion of 5 years of relevant industry/practice experience member can use “FCA” (Fellow Member of Chartered Accountant) as qualification.

CA qualified is also eligible to use prefix of “CA” before their name.
